Goat’s Corner: Millbrook, and the Cary Institute

Backcountry Millbrook, New York

I love this route, because every inch is so pretty, from the start in Tribute Gardens in Millbrook to the wildlife habitat of the Cary Institute. Like a hike on your bike.

This route begins in the pretty village of Millbrook, so you can choose to have a lunch or picnic before setting out. Tribute Gardens is the perfect spot to have a sandwich; there are cafes in walking distance from the park. You’ll also find a gazebo with a power outlet, should you need to charge up.

Do this ride any time of year, or any time of day: the roads are remote and you’ll barely pass a car the entire time.

The loop route to and from Tribute Gardens in Millbrook, New York.

The Details:

Distance: 11.1 miles

Shape: Loop

Direction: I prefer counter-clockwise.

Afterwards: Enjoy any of the interesting restaurants, cafes or diners in Millbrook, a walkable village with a tidy business district.

The Roads:

  • Woodstock and Petit Roads are both dirt roads, but nothing too difficult.
  • Cary Institute roads may not be open to car traffic, but you can ride your bike through the paved sections of the park.
  • While we avoid “lined” roads as much as possible, there’s no avoiding Route 44 (the Sharon Turnpike), which is your return back to Millbrook village. It’s not bad and there’s a wide shoulder.
