I’d like to show the beauty of a post-restoration Great Marsh, as part of an assignment for the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration. That means an early morning, and at the height of summer, it’s a four-thirty start. Practically my favorite time: nobody out but the birds, and an occasional furry creature.
One way to restore this salt marsh in Newman, Massachusetts? Replace an undersize culvert to free tidal flow. This impaired salt marsh has a long history of human interference — hay harvesting, farming and channelizing — and this project was a step toward a full restoration.
